Performing
Matthew has been playing music for many years - he's a
clarinetist, saxophonist, recorder player
and singer with wide experience of a range of
genres.
He began his
musical career at the age of four, when he began piano
lessons. Unfortunatley, he hated them; fortunately, his
parents asked him what he would like to play instead.
There was a clarinet that his mum had been learning
whilst she'd been pregnant with him still hanging around
the study - so he thought he'd try
that.
At age 13 he joined his local Morris team,
the Ironmen and Severn Gilders, and discovered a love of folk
music. Following a traditional musical education, he attained
professional qualifications in both clarinet and voice (Grade 8
ABRSM on both) before continuing to widen his performance
experience at Durham University.
Throughout this period he continued to work
with exceptional musicians from a wide variety of genres; Here
is a list of as many as he can remember from that time:
apologies if he's missed any!
As you can see, Folk music has never been far
from his life - he has played with a number of different
sessions, from the Cumberland in Broseley to the Dun Cow on Old
Elvet.
Matthew has worked with a number of other
groups since leaving University; links to some of these can be
found on the following pages.
