Contemporary Composing

Matthew gained a Masters Degree in composition from Durham University in 2004. He studied with Martyn Harry, with a focus on Music Theatre, using Mauricio Kagel's Staadtstheatre as the main set work for the techniques module of the course.

His individual style of composition combines a range of influences:

  • The lyrical, melodic nature of English traditional song;
  • The rhythmic power of traditional dance styles from across Europe;
  • The textural interest of 15th- and 16th-century polyphony;
  • The elegant simplicity of Howard Skempton's piano works;
  • The role of communication and directness of expression as exemplified by the music of Martyn Harry.

He has composed work for a wide variety of groups; on the following pages are a selection of recordings made over the last ten years.

  Pange Lingua performed by Ensemble Expose
  The Dreamweaver Quartet performed by Durham Contemporary Music Ensemble
  Recorders 4 performed by M Keegan-Phipps
  Conception performed by Durham University Symphony Orchestra
  Other recordings will be added to this list as they become available.
